26 Dec 1791. LETTER ABOUT SALE OF A SCOTTISH DEBT. Bundle 60, Doc 9. 22.5 cm x 18.5 cm. Mr. LITTLE 26. Decr. 1791 – ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Sir Mr. LOWTHIAN put up the whole of BEWLEYs Debts on Saturday at £ 10. only and there being no one to bid against him we closed the Sale without striking them off to him deeming the Sum offered to very inadequate. – Mr. LOWTHIAN was I believe Commissioned by Mr. RAMSAY of Dumfries and would have gone a considerable length I dare say, had he been opposed. – Yesterday I recd. a Letter from Mr. FOOT saying that he had intended to have been at the Sale but was prevented by the badness of the day & he informed me that he has a Friend that will give £ 50 for the Scotch Debt & pay the money as soon as a proper assignmt. of it can be made. – The assignees not having a power you know to Sell by private Contract I have again advertized the Debts to be Sold on the 11th. Jany. & have written to Mr. FOOT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ acquainting him therewith and have requested him or his Friend to attend in person & put it up at that Sum, and if nothing more is bid that it is most probable they will get it. – I wish you could make it convenient to be here also. – I am Dr. Sir Your mo: obt Servt. [signed] Tho: LITTLE Carlisle 26th. Decr. 1791 –
