27 Feb 1790. LETTER WITH NEWS FROM HARTLEY. Bundle 62, Doc 28. 38 cm x 23 cm, folded in half to make four pages. Third page blank. 19 cm x 6.5 cm rectangle cut out of letter (no writing lost). Red seal with corresponding hole where it was torn open. Scribbled calculations on the outside not transcribed. John DAWSON 27th. Feby. 1790. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mr. OLDMAN Edenhall by favour Mr. JACKSON ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hartley 27th Feby. 1790 Dr. Sir I recd. yours of ye 17th Inst. with ye Acct. for Buildings which I find right ye Ash wood comes higher than forign fir would do at 1s - 6d pr. foot in right lenths what would answer no waiste, I had forgot ye makeing up ye lime & Cutting foundations as our wallers always do them I shall give it up as I forgot them it makes ye Sum even two Guineas more a payment ––––––– I was to have Longrigg devided in ye Year 1769 I take this from ye Lease And the said Sir Philip MUSGRAVE doth further covenant and promise to erect and build or cause to be erected and built a Division Wall between the high and low end of High Longrigg with all convenient Speed in the place alreadey agreed on he the said Ino. DAWSON for himself his Executors and Administrators hereby covenanting and agreeing to keep the same in sufficient repair during all the Term aforesaid –––– ––––––– I was to have it done without aney Interest then it is not done yet, & sooner than it should be aney longer undone I am willing to pay Interest, & if I had been fortunate with Mining I should have done it my self I have done as much at ye high part of Longrigg with ye Meadow field & I have always had great loss with ye Hay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ it will turn no water, it is so short & that field has Cost me above 100£ besides my own Labour paid Limeing Walling & Clearing ye field for Mowing I shall always be a great looser by it ––––– I think Stones Quarring leading & walling may be well done for 6s per Rood Sheep fence 7 Quarters under Cam or Coble at top & that part that parts New Close & Longrigg for ye High devision of Longrigg it is one part out of 4 to stop ye fell sheep for going into New Close may be about 25 Roods & may be repaired for two Shillings Rood with some better Stones throughs Lead is fallen one third at Stockton it will break poor Mines I am in hopes it will mend this spring I have but Sold 2 piggs Riggs Lead yet, theire is 28 piggs Birkit Lead smelted & I think theire will be 7 more will make for 5 piggs & 7 from Riggs will be 12 piggs at ye Mill for you now, I have 4 Men on at Bargin by Mettall & 4 at Dead work I have gone through Riggs Vein with ye Cross Cut from ye bottom of ye Hill 7 fathoms but do not cut Birkit Vein & ye great & plaite beds has much water in them I was feared of being drowned out so have set of North east in Riggs Vein out of ye low levell or cros cut but it is poor & hard at present –––– I am sinking new shaft between ye Cros Cut & ye new shaft I sunk before near ye top of ye Hill, pray spare some time this Summer to view what is done under ground –––– I had a line from Mr. DOBSON last week about ye Breach in Mrs. ALDERSON land with ye water ––––– my kind Compliments to Mrs. OLDMAN & hope you are both well as we are at present Praised be God for it I am Sir Your’s &c [signed] Jno.
